Hands up who owns a Nokia 5800 then? That'll be 2.5 million of you then. That's not bad going for a device that has only been on sale since the end of January and only hit the US last month. It was reported that at the end of January the 1 million mark had been hit, so any additional 1.5 million in the last two months is great news.
The Nokia 5800 is officially a top-selling phone hitting the 2.5 million units sold in the first three months of this year.
A report over on AfterDark points out that Nokia was only expecting to sell around one million of its first touchscreen in the same time period. So, hitting the 2.5 million milestone is something of an overachievement in these credit-crunchie times.
There was a story circulating that the Nokia 5800 has sold over 13 million handsets. This was stated by Rob Taylor, director of Forum Nokia North America during CTIA Wireless. However, it seems that he got carried away and mentioned sales of the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic instead. This phone went on sale in 2007, so 13 million units sounds about right for this phone.
So, how did we find out this was a mis-quote and not the real deal? It seems the guys over on Nokia Conversations, posted the gaff on Twitter.
