Nokia 5800 to get new touchscreen?

We've been more than happy with the touchscreen display on the Nokia 5800 but is it about to undergo something of a change in technology?

At the moment, the Nokia 5800 uses a resistive touchscreen but is Nokia about to switch over to capacitive technology in order to match other devices out there?

We've been using the Nokia 5800 for over three months now, check out our feelings on the 5800, and one of the things we love is the solid touch to the display. Sure, it means you have to be precise with what you're tapping but the solid finish adds to the overall feel of the handset.

A report that's emerged on DigiTimes is that Nokia could well be about to switch this resistive display for a capacitive display as used in rival devices. DigiTimes cites the usual 'Taiwan handset component supplier' as it's source.

At this stage it's just a rumour but the report goes on to say that 2 million of the screens have been ordered and could well start circulating as soon as May or June time, if the reports prove true.

As a final aside, this switch to a capacitive screen means that we may also see slimmer and lighter touchscreen devices later this year – after the launch of the Nokia N97. This once again points to the idea of the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic being launched at Nokia World in September but will it be accompanied by other similar devices?

One things for sure, it looks like Nokia is taking the touchscreen market for its S60 devices seriously, which can only be good news for the whole industry.

If you've not already bought into the idea of the Nokia 5800, does this change in screen technology make it a more likely purchase for you? Let us know in the Comments below...

I doubt it. New model? Probably!

If they change it at the middle of the game they would need to spend more in testing and it would take time. In that time they could launch a different model.

    Was the sceen ordered 3.2\"?

If Nokia 5800 becomes capacitive, than they would need to drop the stylus, and do a firmware to take away handwrite input…

    Not likely…

I would never buy a cell with capacitive screen. I’ve tried the IPhone and it was total crap! Absolutely useless. But this 5800 which I just got is great. A touchscreen phone you can’t use your nails or a stylus on when things get a bit cramped on the screen is absolutely useless.

For a new device, I am sure that Nokia will bring with capacitive screen. Nokia is known for experiment with different Mobile technologies, there will be Nokia’s with capacitive screens and non-capacitive screens for anyone who chooses to buy one. This will stop the flaming war on the internet about Apple being much cooler than Nokia because of using capacitive screens.

Will it be a hit or a miss for Nokia , that remains to be seen….

Hello. I would like to buy a new mobil phone with capacitive display made by nokia. I think it could be much better than Iphone 3GS. Iphone has many thing to improve. For example bluetooth you can use only for a few things. Actually for headset indeed. Nokia makes a comfortable and more usefull phones with beautifull design. One thing why i would not buy touch-screen from Nokia is their resistive display. Compared to Iphone is better in display, but….one thing why i would not buy iphone is that usage of iphone phones is worse than presently other phones.I think that only one thing why iphone is so sold over the world is their a great control with capacitive display and quite beautifull design. If the iphone set up full function of bluetooh and support the other things (as mass storage, bluetooth, micro usb, replaced battery) and last but not least is prize it will be more sold phone than presently. Prize could be cheaper.. I will wait for mobile phone with capacitive display by Nokia or for new upgrade od iphone. Thanks for reading.
