Get with the geo-tagging revolution with Location Tagger from Nokia. This small app for GPS-enabled S60 3rd edition phones automatically tags mobile photos with longitude and latitude.
In this brave new location-based world, everything can be mapped and navigated – and that includes your photos. Some Nokia handsets now come with location tags built-in to the camera, but for anyone using an older nav-phone – like the Nokia 6110 – it’s easy enough to upgrade.
Start by installing and opening Location Tagger. This calls up a home screen that shows the current state of your phone’s GPS receiver (‘searching’ or ‘locked’) and your co-ordinates in latitude and longitude. If the GPS can’t get a signal because you’re indoors, it will automatically grab the last set of co-ordinates from the previous 10 minutes. If you’ve been under cover longer than that, you can manually paste your last locked position with one button press.
Then simply start the camera as normal. In the viewfinder, a small icon shows that Location Tagger is active. If the icon is green, it’s locked to a location. Amber means that it’s searching and red means the GPS module isn’t working. When you shoot a photo, a message that the image is tagged flashes up briefly. Unfortunately, you can’t geo-tag videos.
Back in Location Tagger, you can see a list of tagged images although sadly not on a map view on your phone. For that, you’ll need to upload the images to a photo sharing website. Flickr and Picasa both accept and display the geo-tagged images automatically, as long as you adjust your settings to scan for GPS co-ordinates.
Location Tagger is both a great addition for photo buffs and an efficient way to tag and share location-based info with your friends. But it needs to be easier to use. Having to open the app before each snap is annoying, the GPS saps power unnecessarily (despite a five-minute time-out ) and you should be able to view images on a map using just your phone.
