Mobile Web Server review

Move over Amazon, step aside Facebook – now you can start your own web empire from the comfort of your S60 Nokia, thanks to Nokia Mobile Web Server.

Think of Mobile Web Server as an application that lifts your phone into the cloud, giving you (or anyone you want) access to its content and functions from any internet browser, anywhere in the world.

Installation is straightforward, with a single download from Nokia Beta Labs. You’ll need to register a domain name at mymobilesite.net, then log in from the Mobile Web Server app.

Now your phone has its own web page (the URL will be something like https://yoursitename.mymobilesite.net/), where visitors can check your calendar, read your moblog, webchat with you and much more.

You can set permission levels for various users, from no access to read-only to full administrator. For instance, everyone could be allowed to see your blog, send you (free) text or instant messages and set up a live web chat with your phone – all of which work simply and quickly.

Beyond that, your mates might have read and write access to your calendar and contacts, and be allowed to view and download your phone’s photos. These can take a while to appear in their browser, depending on how many images and contacts you have – anything over a few hundred can be very sluggish.

Finally, you might decide to allow your very best friends or partner the ultimate access to your Nokia. The Camera tag allows a web surfer to remotely take a picture, which then appears in their browser.

The Presence tag shows how much battery power you have left, your current availability (taken from the Calendar) and, for phones with GPS or network positioning, it will even reveal your exact location.

Forget its clunky web interface and limited feature set, Mobile Web Server turns your humble handset into a fully-fledged Web 2.0 destination. You’ll need a generous (read: unlimited) data plan to make the most of everything it has to offer but this free app is well worth a download, if only to marvel at what the future holds.
