With May looming that means we're drawing close to the Ovi Store opening its doors for public business. We've no official word on the when that first day of business will be, other than 'very soon'. However, news has come out of the final day of the Developer Summit that it will launch with at least ONE THOUSAND apps – great news for those of us wanting to stuff our
The 1st of May will see the end of Mosh, which clears the way for Ovi Store to take up the mantle of Nokia's app and mobile game store. Everything you need for your Nok will be found under one 'virtual' roof. The Ovi Store brings together Download!, MOSH, and WidSets, to a single channel. With Mosh gone, surely it won't be long until Ovi Store is up and running?
Eweek covered the Nokia Developer Summit that has been running this week in Monaco and ran an interesting piece on Ovi Store. The highlight of which were a number of comments made by Eric John, director of marketing for Forum Nokia:
Eric John, director of marketing for Forum Nokia, the cell phone giant's developer outreach organization, said there are thousands of applications in the pipeline being vetted by Nokia, and that when the much-anticipated Ovi Store debuts in May it will have at least 1,000 or more applications on it.
One Thousand different apps is a hell of a lot to go at, after all Apple only managed a couple of hundred apps when they put out the Apple Store. Nokia is clearly setting the bench high and sending a message out to other companies that Ovi Store means business.
We've no word yet the range these apps will cover but it was mentioned earlier that mobile games would also be integrated into the site.
Rob Taylor also mentioned that a project was in the pipeline to offer hundreds of embedded apps on the Nokia N97 when it launches, allowing each region to add area specific tools, which sounds pretty cool to us.
