If Charles Darwin was around to play a few levels of System Rush: Evolution, he’d see his ‘survival of the fittest’ concept in action. System Rush: Evolution (SRE) might have been around since the very (re)birth of N-Gage but it still looks, sounds and plays as good as anything else in N-gage ecosystem.
At its heart, System Rush: Evolution is a stunning, futuristic 3D racer, with you as the world’s last hacker fighting a global computer network to free the world’s data. Simply put, its lightning fast, hallucinatory graphics have to be seen to be believed. Your craft starts in Infiltration mode, storming down smoothly scrolling sci-fi tunnels and across Tron-like plains, avoiding obstacles and collecting power-ups to the accompaniment of the obligatory adrenaline-pumping techno score.
Finish the required number of laps within the time limit and you progress to the next stage – Shutdown, where on-board weapons are activated to tackle swarms of digital baddies. Finally, the action slackens off (very slightly) as you Evacuate: piloting your swooping craft through a course of aerial hoops.
There are ten sub-nets (levels) to conquer, with a learning curve that’s steeper than an economic stimulus bill. If you’re having trouble with higher levels, you can revisit previous sub-nets levels to hoover up any remaining ‘evolution’ stars (which help to permanently power-up your craft). Or just head online and enjoy multi-player races with up to three other players.
System Rush: Evolution is a brain-mangling, eye-ripping 3D experience that encapsulates all that’s best about mobile gaming on the N-Gage. Darwin would be proud.
