Nokia has released details of what is expected to be one of the biggest changes to Ovi Maps we've seen in a while. The Beta app allows you access to maps and route planning, both in-car and on foot and is about to get a major update that will incorporate 3D maps, more POI and a greater level of integration with websites. Check out the full details of the update after the jump...

Anyone who keeps an eye on Nokia Beta Labs will be aware that content is being added and updated all the time. The latest is Ovi Maps, which we're informed has gone through something of a drastic overhaul of late. This has meant moving away from static 2D bitmaps to incorporating 3D into the interface.

What's more, Ovi Maps now offers better maps than ever before, both in 2D and 3D. The latest update includes 3D landmarks for over 200 cities, rotation, tilting, night view, and fly-overs and fly-throughs. Point Of Interest (POI) information supplied by Lonely Planet, Michelin and Wcities helps to pack out what is on offer, making Ovi Maps a more rounded offering. Ovi Maps updated

That's not all, as Nokia has also rolled out the Ovi Maps Player API, which is an easy way to embedĀ  the new Ovi Maps into any website using JavaScript. This means that users can now make the most of Ovi Maps by embedded it into their own websites and uploading personal content to the maps. One of the first companies to do so it Lonely Planets, who will be using the service to offer its website users a greater level of detail about what to look for and how to explore new areas.

Ovi Maps is still very much in the Beta stage but it looks like things are moving quickly for the location tool. You can get more information from Ovi Maps.
