Comes With Music is Nokia's all-you-can-eat music download service and with well over 6 million tracks to choose from, it's proving more than popular in our house. We've been putting it to the test of late using a Nokia 5310 XpressMusic, but we've also started using the Nokia 5800 Comes With Music. We've reached the letter J - check out how we're doing as we build a music library using Comes With Music...
Comes With Music is packed with music, six million tracks the last time someone checked, so it was only a matter of time before we started having problem. When it comes to getting the most from Comes With Music, it helps to have a good idea of how to get around the site, as simply typing in a name doesn’t always work. The Jam for instance, we found that if you simply type the name of the band in nothing shows up. This had us a little confused at first, as surely The Jam is on there?
A quick look for Paul Weller highlighted that all his solo albums were present and correct but that not J. However, it did show up a few ‘If you like this’ suggestions, of them was a Jam album. Click on the link and you’ll find the entire back catalogue. The Sound of The Jam is a great place to start, as it’s a 49 track Best of album. Once that had downloaded, we added Snap and The Gift as a couple of prime choices, as well as In the City.
Taking a completely different tack, we have the Jackson 5 who seem to be back in the news largely because the youngest Jackson, that’ll be the King of Pop to you and me, has his tour on the road. The Jackson 5 bring back a time of big hair and bigger flairs, so it’s best to start with the Greatest Hits, before moving on to sample something a little more out there, such as ABC to even Boys & Girls.
One band who is bound to have sample the Jackson 5 are the Hip Hop crew, Jurassic 5. Now, we thought we’d check out what was on offer on Comes With Music and we have to say there isn’t a great deal of Jurassic 5. We manage to pick up three albums, Power in Numbers, Jurassic 5 and Feedback but that seems to be about it on CWM.
The teenage boy seems to have been having the most fun with Comes With Music of late, largely as he’s still building a music collection of his own so Comes With Music is ripe for the picking. However, he seems to be having trouble finding anything he likes starting with J. Out of desperation rather than real need he plumbs for Judas Priest, who seem to be forever doing the Very Metal festival circuit somewhere.
Judas Priest seem to keep releasing albums but teenage boy goes for the older Bristish Steel and Screaming for Vengeance before going for the more modern Nostradamus.
The youngest member of our hosuehold is the 12 year-old girl who thinks Judas Priest are a bit old hat. So, when she steps up with her choices, Jamelia and The Jonas Brothers, we know there is a heavy dollop of Disney Channel involved. Jamelia seems to have managed a career with four albums so far, all of which are on Comes With Music, so Beware the Dog, Super Star, Walk With Me and Drama all get the tick of approval.
The Jonas Brothers are one of those made-for-TV bands that seem to pop up every now and again and have the Disney Channel seal of approval. Two albums make up their entire catalogue todate – the cunningly named Jonas Brothers and the cash-in album Music from the 3D Concert. Both get added and I’ve left wondering if they’ll get listened to again after the media hype has died down?
I get to have the last go on Comes With Music checking out the letter J and have decided, a bit like the lady of the house with J and 5, to go themed. I choose J for Jesus, pulling Jesus and Mary Chain, Jesus Jones and Jesus Lizard out of the hat.
Jesus Jones was one of those indie/dance cross over bands back in the 1990 who had a brilliant album in Liquidizer, which gets added to the download list, but then seemed to tread water before giving up. We at a 31 track Never Enough best of, which comes with some interesting remixes and decide to move on.
Jesus and Mary Chain will always be remembered for the band that would often play for 10 minutes, most of that being feedback, and then walk off bored, fed up or both! Psychocandy was the big album, so a natural choice for Comes With Music and we also hit 21 Singles, which is a best of. Before picking Automatic and Darklands, remembering that Jesus and Mary Chain were never really a singles band.
Jesus Lizard is something of a wild card, as we didn’t expect much in the way of this hardcore band from the States to make it on to Comes With Music. To give the service its dues, it throws up two of the band’s big label albums, Blue and Shot but we get the feeling that the best of their back catalogue may never really make it on to Comes With Music.
RANDOM TRACK: The beauty of Comes With Music is that you can experiment with new types of music, which is something we're keen to try. We've dabbled with Jazz before, with Miles Davis being the closest we’d call as ‘likely to get played again in our house’ but we’re willing to give it another go. We can’t find a Jazz artist being with J so we cop out and go for a Jazz Moods album, which offers up 40 songs ranging from Nina Simone to the more recent Nora Jones.
