Is Comes With Music about to lose it's DRM protection and switch over to open source MP3 files instead? The latest rumours gathering pace online would suggest that Nokia is about to announce a switch of download preference for its all-you-can-download music service. Comes With Music is Nokia’s own music subscription service that allows you to download as much music as you like for a year, or longer if you choose to extend the subscription. It's a great way to build a music library and we're enjoying making the most of Comes With Music - we're currently making the most of the rather large and splendid Elvis Presley back catalogue.

It is claimed that Nokia is expected to switch off the DRM (Digital Rights Management) that Comes With Music is tied too later this year. The latest rumour doing the rounds suggests that Nokia will also make the move away from the Windows WMA file format and offer the more open-source friendly MP3 format instead. Hopefully, with this switch in format will come more choice as to the compression format, as WMA is currently locked at 192kbps, which is great for every day use but not if you're thinking of archiving.

If this all comes to pass, we could see Comes With Music moving to MP3 at some point in 2010.

One question we have about this change in file format and DRM status would be in regards to the content already downloaded – would this become unlocked or would we need to download it all again? So, what do you think, are you likely to download more music if Nokia makes the switch to MP3 and leaves WMA behind?

DRM is bad. If nokia stopped using drm protected music I would definately buy my music through nokia music. as it is now I won’t put my money in hte store.

THANKS!!! I hope so, I like my music compressed in acc or m4a format, and I use a lot the Nokia service, but I have to burn music CD’s and then rip them in order to have mp3 in my pc and m4a in my mobile.

Great ! If all you want is sound, you can find MP3 players that pack a lot of storage space at an attractive price. And other than headphones, MP3 speakers are available which can be connected to the MP3 player and free the listener from using headphones. Off course , we should find out information about what kind of MP3 speakers we interest best.
