Nokia and Intel have entered into an agreement that will see both companies working together to develop and enhance the future of mobile computing. While we were hoping to see some new kit announced with this agreement, it seems we'll have to wait a while longer for the fabled Nokia Netbook. Check out the full details of the Nokia and Intel agreement after the jump...
Nokia and Intel have entered in to an agreement to develop a new class of Intel Architecture-based mobile computing device and range of chipset architectures. The two companies will work together to develop faster chips, chipsets and technologies to make the next generation of mobile devices the fastest yet.
This is a long term agreement, rather than the rumoured 'Nokia smartphones will now use Intel chips' that most people were expecting. Under the terms of the agreement, Nokia and Intel will work together to develop devices that go beyond the current smartphones, notebooks and netbooks and have a heavy focus on mobile computing.
This agreement includes collaboration in a number of open source mobile Linux software projects. The idea is that both companies will develop common technologies for use in the Moblin and Maemo projects, which will deliver Linux-based operating systems for these future mobile computing devices. Intel will also acquire a Nokia HSPA/3G modem IP license, which will help expand its mobile broadband options.
Reaction to the announcement has been rather mixed, with ZD Net stating 'A Nokia, Intel partnership makes sense, but they need to focus on smartphones', while Information Week suggests that the deal 'gives Nokia more mobile options'.
Slashgear carried the same response most people, ourselves included offered, that this announcement didn't come with any new shiny, while PC Mag believes the 'greater potential impact may lie in the licensing of Nokia's 3G HSPA technology', which would suggest that Intel has the better part of the deal.
What do you think, is this announcement the best way for Nokia to move forward and will we see the Nokia Netbook appear as a result of today's agreement?
