Nokia 6700 Classic First Impressions

The Nokia 6700 Classic launched last week alongside the Nokia N86 MP and, more importantly, the Nokia N97. However, we’ve managed to get our hands on a device, so have had just 24 hours to get to grips with the Nokia 6700 Classic. Check out how we we’ve been getting on…

The Nokia 6700 Classic has arrived and if you've not already checked out our Nokia 6700 Classic Unboxing, then see for yourself what comes in the box!

There are two things about the Nokia 6700 Classic that strike you the most about this phone as soon as you pick it up. The first is the chrome finish and how amazing it looks. Sure, we seem to be in the throes of developing OCD with this phone as we’ve found ourselves constantly wiping it down but it looks so good you simply want to keep it that way.

The second is just how solid it feels in the hand. The whole body is made from stainless steel with chrome coating, giving a truly tactile feel, Weighing 116g, this is no lightweight phone, as it feels reassuringly weighty in the hand. It’s a slim device measuring 110 x 45 x 11mm with a nice centre of balance.

People we have shown the Nokia 6700 Classic too have commented on both these points, so the finish and the weight could be a long running debate and ones we’ll be keeping an eye on.

The keypad has the same chrome finish, so you’ll find the keys are in four strips rather than individual buttons. This is the part of the phone we’ve found ourselves cleaning the most. The buttons have a nice action and respond well to being pressed.

The 2.2-inch screen is bright and the use of the Symbian S40 OS has so far proven easy to get to grips with. The Homescreen has all the main apps running along the top and there are three slots below this you can populate with your most commonly used apps. By default, you’ll find Notes, Calendar and Media Player – as well as FM Radio – already loaded. Starting apps is quick and we’ve found no real lag switching so far.

With the Media Player in mind, the 6700 Classic comes with 150MB of memory, most of that seems reserved for the OS at this point. It ships with a 1GB microSD card but can support up to 8GB with ease.

The reason we’re rather excited about this phone is that, while it may be running S40 instead of S60 apps, many of the features built into this phone are rather top-notch. The 5-Megapixel camera will be getting a real work over in the next few days, as will the A-GPS and Nokia Maps.

The Nokia 6700 Classic looks like being a great phone and is definitely worth considering by anyone tempted by the idea of high-end features but not yet ready to take the full smartphone experience on-board.

The main problem of this phone is the KEABOARD.
It’s cheap. It’s crap. Noisy, like a low class phone. What a downgrade !!!!

as a cyclist, gps is fairly ballcrap. no place names on the maps. have to wait freakin sixteen crapzillion years for it to lock on to where you are by which time the battery is flat. speakerphone seems worse than the predecessor, 6500 which i upgraded from – people keep complaining they cant hear me when i use it. takes lots of reasonable quality photos – would be good if the flash could be used as a torch like on some phones. easy clean big flush fitting screen. pretty solid ive not broken it yet – i break lots of phones by snapping them when i get annoyed.
