AMF Bowling Pinbusters made its first appearance on the Wii and this port onto N-Gage takes all the same elements but gives them a mobile twist for those who want to play 10-pin bowling on their Nokia. Find out how we got on down in the lanes with our AMF Bowling Pinbusters review....
AMF Bowling Pinbusters is an attempt to bring a full-blown 10-pin bowling game to N-Gage. There are an array of 'stereotypical' characters all with their own themed alleys. So, we get the Greaser, the Rocker, the Football Player.
There are three different modes – Quick Play, Single Player, Multiplayer, which offers support through N-Gage Arena, as well as playing with a friend on your Nokia. The Single player mode allows you to practise your skills, enter tournaments and generally build up your career. Winning games unlocks new characters, alleys and the chance to learn new skills.
A typical game consists of the game 10 rounds each. You get to move left or right, then add power to your shot and as the ball goes down the lane you get to add spin. All of which work well but it does make for a rather slow and repetitive game. It's not just the rather simple game play, as once you've taken your turn you need to click a couple of times to move the game back in to play.
However, the biggest problem we had with the game is that you have to go through your opponents line up and moves too, which is tedious and just slows the game down even further. We can see the benefit in the early stages as you can study form but in reality once you've got to grips with the power ups, the game is simplicity itself.
Verdict
AMF Bowling Pinbusters isn't a bad game, it's just not a very good one. In trying to be a little too faithful to the pinball experience, it gets too slowed down. We like the idea of a good bowling game for N-Gage but sadly this isn't it, as it's just to repetitive.
