Comes With Music: Building a library Hannah Montana to Morrissey

Comes With Music is Nokia’s music subscription service that allows you to download as much music as you like for a year, or longer if you choose to extend the subscription. Currently, there are over six million tracks to choose from. It's a great way to build your own music library, which is precisely what we’ve been doing. So, why not check out what the Letter M has to offer on Comes With Music

Comes With Music is a great way to get hold of music, either back catalogue stuff, which means you can get rid of all those old CDs filling up the shelves in the dining room, or to get the latest pop hits!

With no record collection of her own, my 12-year old daughter has taken to the downloading like a natural. Now, if you are 12, a girl and know anything about pop, TV and latest fashion then you’ll know there is nothing bigger than Hannah Montana. However, the bods over at Nokia Music need to be given a nudge as while you can get Hannah Montana The Original Soundtrack, which was released in 2006, it seems that Comes With Music music hasn’t got the new Hannah Montana The Movie, so is like, so behind the times!

For my daughters second choice, she’s opted for Mika (much to her Mother’s dismay!) as the prince of all things cartoon pop turns up on Comes With Music with his Life In Cartoon Motion album, as well as the Relax – Take it Easy EP and even the six track eSingle, Love Today.

Who put the M in Comes With Music? Why that would be Morrissey! Hardly a day goes by when he’s not playing somewhere in our house. We own everything he’s ever done, at least we thought we did, as we didn’t own the Singles Box Set - HMV Parlophone Singles '91-95' so that gets added to the download, along with Morrissey The Singles '88-91'.

Another man with a singular vision like Morrissey is Stephin Merritt, the voice and driving force behind The Magnetic Fields. We were a little disappointed not to find 69 Love Songs, their best work to date, up on Comes With Music, as the choices seem to be split between the Domino records re-issues of Holyday and The Westward Bus and the more recent I and last year’s Distortion on Nonesuch records. This latest album, as the name implies, uses distortion on every song to out-Jesus & Mary Chain even the Jesus & Mary Chain.

The lady of the house decides that for her second choice she wants some Muse. All their highly flamboyant albums are on Comes With Music but it is Absolution, Origin of Symmetry and Blackholes and Revelations that make it on to the list first.

Staying with the Rock theme, teenage boy makes an appearance and is ready to bag himself to whole Metallica back catalogue but is a little upset and downhearted to find that only the best selling Master of Puppets is up for grabs. It’s grabbed but with a grumble of ‘where’s the rest?’ – we’ll have to ask Lars Ulric that one, me thinks!

He has a little more luck with My Chemical Romance, who are perfect for the Comes With Music generation, as all their albums are on there. So, we add I Brought You Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge and last years The Black Parade.

Bringing up the final choice for the Letter M we check out whether The Minutemen, one of the finest Punk Rock bands to ever come out of the US are actually on Comes With Music. In truth, am not expecting much, but am a little shocked to find it all there for the taking! Introducing to The Minutemen is a good place to start but for the true masterclass in what it means to be a Minuteman you need Double Nickle on the Dime and yes, it’s on there, including the classic ‘Political Song For Michael Jackson to Sing’.

RANDOM ALBUM: The beauty of Comes With Music is that you can experiment with new types of music, which is something we've been trying with a degree of success. We opt at random for Soul/R'n'B/Funk and pull up Daniel Merriweather's Love & War, which gets a look of approval from the ladies of the house but a humph from the male side! One for the ladies nights, it seems....
