The Nokia 6700 Classic is a Series S40 phone that comes with some pretty high-end phone features - none more so than the 5-Megapixel camera. With that in mind, we thought it was time to check out how practical the Nokia 6700 Classic camera really is. Join us after the jump the Nokia 6700 Classic camera review...

The Nokia 6700 Classic is a pleasing phone to use, as the candybar design and Chrome finish make it compact and highly pocketable. What's more, once you get passed the gloss, you'll find this is a cracking define stuffed with some serious top tech. Whether it's the GPS, Bluetooth or easy to use interface, the thing most people will be drawn to is the 5-Megapixel camera.

On the right-hand side of the Nokia 6700 Classic you'll find a dedicated Capture button, as well as zoom buttons, which also double as volume control for the media player. The buttons are small and discrete and while the Capture button works well, we have found the zoom buttons a little fiddly to get to grips with.

You can load up the camera from the main scroll on the top of the S40 screen or you can press the Capture button on the side of the phone. The screen layout is rather minimal, with the mode (Still or Video) in the top left-hand corner, the number of shots remaining in the bottom-left and Exit, Capture and Options buttons on the right-hand side of the screen.

Options takes you into the main menu of the Nokia 6700 Classic camera and offers up View Images, which will take you into the photo album, while Switch to Video mode is also self explanatory.

Settings that allow you to define where you want the images stored, along with image quality and image size. You can even pre-define titles, which is a nice touch as it will save tagged later on. Settings are also where you can define whether you want in-camera sound effects, as well as how long you can preview any taken snaps.

Next comes Flash, which has a mere three settings, On, Off and Automatic. Self-Timer can be sec to go off in 3-, 5-, or 10 seconds, while Image Sequence can be set to fire off four images in as many seconds. Then there four Effects settings, Normal, Greyscale, Sepia and Negative, which you can see examples of down below.

White Balance can be set to Auto, Daylight, Tungsten or Fluorescent round out the functions you can change the Nokia 6700 Classic camera to. You won't be able to fine tune focal length and aperture, which is all handled in-camera, but there are enough features to make sure you get the bets possible shots from most every day situations.

Putting all these together and actually using the Nokia 6700 Classic in daily use is easy, we've found this a decent camera to use. When it comes to taking pictures, this is very much a point-n-shoot camera. You can switch between Portrait and Landscape mode. Due to the screen being 2.2-inch, we have found ourselves preferring the Portrait mode but you'll get better group shots in Landscape mode.

We have found that using the D-pad to capture shots doesn't allow you to focus as sharply as using the Capture button. This is due to it not allowing you to half press to focus, as it will set the focal length but then when you lift off your thumb, it takes the snap. Thankfully, this doesn't happen with the dedicated Capture button and you can focus in the standard way.

The Nokia 6700 Classic camera has a few niggles but it works well and getting great results from the phone is easy. The 5-Megapixel camera on its own, may not be enough to make you want to switch to the Nokia 6700 Classic but it helps to tick one of the boxes that makes this a great mainstream device.

    “Symbian S40 phone”

S40 doesn’t use Symbian. The underlying OS is called NOS or Nokia OS not Symbian.

    Noted and changed :)

Thanks for the review.Nokia is a well-known and famous name among cell phone companies. It has a sleek design. The 5 pixel digital camera is really satisfying. It is user friendly. The price is quiet reasonable. For more details refer http://www.etechreviews.net/review-of-the-nokia-6700-classic/

Helpful review. One query. Does the camera have a shutter i.e. to protect the lense when the camera is not in use?

  • Mikey Bee

@Frankie: Afraid not – it’s open on the back. Check out our photo of the back of the device and se http://noknok.tv/2009/06/29/nokia-6700-classic-review/nokia-6700-review-04/

Good review, you mention that in the settings you can change the “in-camera sound effects”, mine doesnt have this option within the camera settings. Am i looking in the right place?

good ph but how can i switch off the camera sound while taking picture can any one guide me.

  • Tia

Which phone cam is better – the X6 or the 6700 Classic? I know these phones are radically different but I want the best camera! Many thanks!!

  • Mikey Bee

@Tia – I’d say the X6, it’s just easier to use and the dual-flash means you can get some pretty good images even in low light

  • Tia

    Thanks so much!

Am i just an idiot or what? but i have tried everything and there is no way i have been able to put off the sound of my camera on my Nokia 6700 classic. Any help please?

  • Jafar

I tried couple of times to turn off the camera sound. I dont think u can turn off the sound. It has 5 megapixel camera which is one features make it better than other phone, thats why the didn’t put that option

i just bought this phone last week and im takin it back. i had a 6220c with 5mp camera and 30 frames per sec video. it also had an amazing mic and amazing speakers for play back. i recorded live music gigs in dark noisy bars and they always came up perfect. then it died. firstly the buttons then the screen because i threw it across the room… anyway id take that phone back anyday. i bought 6700c for/expecting the same tec but i was wrong..
this 6700c has faster internet in comparison and far better buttons that prob wont stick and give up like my 6220c. it looks leaner and more modern to (for a classic model). but it is polyphonic! my previous ring tone (mp3 i think) now doesnt sound the same. its seriously lacking bass and loudness. this doesnt even have the standard ‘beep beep’ message tone. instead it has a variety of echoey futuristic tinny noises that barely resemble a beep.
also the capture and volume/zoom buttons are very thin indeed, fidgety id say. i found i couldnt personalise alot of the things i could on the 6220 also. like pics for the calling screen, the key buttons can set to ‘inbox’ and ‘new mesage’ spacificly but not the full messaging menu. so to go to sent msgs or drafts you quicker going thru the menu which defeats the purpose of quick key buttons. the mesage screen was a little awkward to at first i kept sending blank messages but im ontop of that now lol.
i guess a few of you will be saying these are relativly small things, but these are importand to me in a phone and if you spend £150 on a thing you will be hearing and using every day for god knows how long you want it to sound rite and polyphonic doesnt to me im affraid. (sorry if this looks like a rant, ive already writtin more than i expected)

ps it doesnt have a protective shutter or anything for the camera lens so dont put it in the same pocket as your house keys!

  • Farah

I really cannot find the option to switch the camera sound off my Nokia 6700! Please help…

  • Jimmy

    Hey.
Just go to camera>settings>camera & vid sounds… and turn them off… easy :)
