Mundu Radio is an Internet radio app that aims to bring streaming music, news and chat direct to your Nokia. It's a free app that is easy to install and may be the answer to your musical needs. Check out our rMundu Radio review to find out....
Initial impressions of Mundu Radio were not great – we downloaded it from Nokia Ovi Store and were faced with a login screen. Not, we should point out, a login slash registration screen – just username & password and an ‘About Mundu Radio’ menu item.
Despite the total lack of instructions we took a gamble and went to the Mundu website named (but not linked to) in the About box – success! We registered a free account and were able to log in. Not too difficult to figure out, but definitely an example of the kind of thing Ovi Store ought to be helping with – and perhaps vetting for – to ensure a smoother experience.
Anyway. Once the login was sorted, Mundu proved to be a breeze to use. The app is preloaded with a selection of streaming music sites subdivided into genres. Where Mundu scores over Nokia’s own (rather forgotten) Internet Radio App is the ability to add any other such sites that you find. Again, the way you do this doesn’t exactly leap off the screen but trust us when we say that if you go to the website there is a way of adding stations and assigning them to genre categories. Its under ‘My Mundu’ then ‘Manage Playlist’. No, we don’t think it should be called a playlist either.
Audio quality was generally very good, and the music flowed without problems on a relatively slow wifi connection. 3G was a different story - all attempts to connect to an Internet Radio server via 3G were met with 'This server is not a streaming server or has encountered some error' although some poking around suggests that this might just be O2 blocking the streaming port. Bah.
Once the app is happily streaming away there really isn't much to do other than sit back and listen. Annoyingly, there is no support for any multimedia keys (e.g. the play/pause, etc. on an N95) or even the built-in volume controls - volume is controlled by left and right on the D-Pad. Its a small thing, but quite annoying, particularly if you listen with your phone in a pocket or a bag and want to use a remote control.
Mundu Radio is definitely worth a look (and a listen) if you like Internet radio, particularly if you already have some favourite stations and don't mind figuring a few things out for yourself.
