Nokia snaps up cellity to boost social networking skills

Nokia has just announced plans to acquire cellity, a small Hamburg-based mobile software company that specialises in social networking. cellity currently offers a service called Address Book 2.0, which hoovers up contact data from a variety of sources and compiles them in one easy-to-access place - so could Nokia have something similar planned for a future release?

The short answer is, we don't know yet. It's too early to say - Nokia hasn't even inked the contract to acquire cellity yet, although it hopes to close the deal before the end of the third quarter of this year (and the fact that Nokia has just announced its plans to the world suggests the deal is pretty much a guarantee).

What we do know is that the current cellity Address Book 2.0 service - which counts Twitter, Outlook and mobile phone contacts list among the sources with which it's compatible - will not transfer to Nokia, and will be discontinued when the deal goes through.

So it could be that the 14-strong cellity team is put to work on a new feature or service for Nokia - possibly inspired by its currect tech. We'll have to wait and see what happens, but the acquisition suggests that Nokia is looking to boost its social networking credentials further.
