The Nokia 5800 is in the middle of a firmware update, taking everyone's favourite smartphone from Version 21.0.025 up to the new Firmware Version 30.0.011.C02.01. Not everyone has received the update yet but if you're curious how to go about getting it, there are two quite different ways to go about updating your Nokia 5800 firmware – let us show you how...
The Nokia 5800 is Nokia's first touchscreen smartphone and saying it's been a smash hit is something of an understatement. As with all Nokia devices, the Nokia 5800 is on a steady update path and the latest firmware update, Version 30.0.011.C02.01.
This latest update is slowly rolling out around the world and as with all Nokia software, the update isn't released so much by region, more by serial code number on your handset. If you're not sure what you're device code number is, you'll find it on the back of the device, under the battery.
This update, and all subsequent ones, can be received through Nokia PC Suite, which is the software running on your Windows laptop, so you can simply plug your Nokia 5800 into your laptop and check for the update using the Nokia Software Updater (NSU) app.
Increasingly, we're starting to see updates come Over The Air (OTA) using the Device Update tool. If you want to use this method for getting the latest update, then simply head to the main menu by pushing the middle button on your phone.
Next, tap on Settings (this has the spanner icon) and then choose Phone and scroll down to find the Phone Management utility. Tap on this and choose Device Updates. The page that appears will tell you the latest software version for your Nokia 5800.
Now, choose the Options button in the left-hand corner of the screen and select Check For Updates. This will ask you to connect to the internet – if you're near a Wi-Fi hotspot then choose this option, otherwise you'll need to use your 3G connection, which could end up costing you money, especially if it's a large update.
Once you're connected, your Nokia 5800 will sync with the Nokia server and check to see if your phone has an update available. It may be a case that you need to check back a few times before the update arrives. The update shouldn't interfere with your files and current setup but we'd advice you always make a backup of your data before carrying out a firmware update, just to be safe.
