Nokia planning to overhaul its naming system?

We've had our ear pressed firmly to the Nokia rumour mill (ouch!) and we've heard something very interesting indeed: the big N could be about to give its entire naming system a revamp. Why? And to what? Join us after the jump for all the gossip.

To break it down into its simplest terms, it seems that Nokia is planning this overhaul in order to make things easier for the customer - in other words, if you see a certain series name on a certain model, you'll immediately know that it has certain features or specialities.

Mobile Choice gives the example of the current Eseries: all the models come with Wi-Fi, email and messaging abilities, extended syncing functionality and data encryption. This concept will be extended across the entire Nokia range.

Remember those newly trademarked C and Xseries range names we heard about recently? Well, those tie into this new system. For instance, Mobile Choice says all Xseries handsets will have a 3.5mm headphone socket, remote controller connectivity, hot swappable memory cards, radio tuner and other media-centric features and functions.

Interesting stuff indeed, and if the rumours are true we won't have to wait too much longer to find out what Nokia has up its sleeves - apparently the renaming revamp will take place during Nokia World 2009, which is in September. In the meantime, stay tuned for more info.
