The Mercury Prize Album of the Year is a major landmark on the musical award circuit. This year there is a heavy bias towards female singer/songwriters, such as Bat For Lashes, La Roux and Florence and the Machine, showing a healthy respect for independent women in music. The Mercury Music 2009 Awards are in full swing and while we won't find out who the winner is until the 2nd September. Favourites to scoop the £20,000 prize include Bat for Lashes, Florence and the Machine and even Kasabian. Keeping a close eye on the leaders are La Roux and our favourites for the prize, Glasvegas.
