Nokia 5800i breaks cover

Another week, another new Nokia phone turns up on our radar. Well, in this case it isn't strictly new, but modified - the Nokia 5800i XpressMusic is shaping up to be very much like the original 5800... only a wee bit different. Hit the jump for details.

Spotted over at Engadget, the Nokia 5800i looks very much like the existing 5800 on the outside. It's internally where we find the differences. According to reports, the 5800i has no Wi-Fi antenna, and while its 3-megapixel camera is still there, it's now listed as "4.6mm" rather than the original's "3.7mm". What could it all mean?

Well, removing the Wi-Fi antenna from a phone like the Nokia 5800 might seem like a step in the wrong direction, but there are a number of reasons as to why Nokia might have taken this step. One possibility is that they've now combined the Wi-Fi and 3G antennae into one module. Another is that Wi-Fi has been removed for the Chinese market (Wi-Fi isn't allowed there), or at the request of a specific carrier.

And as for the 4.6mm camera? Well, that could be the size of the sensor, in which case it's very likely a change for the better - a larger sensor is able to suck in more light, meaning shutter speeds can be faster.

We've heard nothing official from Nokia yet regarding the 5800i, but we'll keep you posted.
