Nokia N86 8MP gets a firmware updateThe Nokia N86 8MP has received its much anticipated firmware update v20.115 a whole week ahead of schedule. The firmware v20.115 update brings with it some notable improvements to the Nokia N86 8MP’s camera, including face detection for the first time! So what else can you expect from this update? Read on to find out more...

The Nokia N86 8MP is one of our favourite Nokia smartphones of the year. You can check out our Nokia N86 8MP review and even our Nokia N86 8MP camera review to find out more. What's more, it just got a whole lot better with the Firmware Update v20.115, as it brings a host of bug fixes and face detection to the Nokia camera range.

The update has started showing up on some devices, sadly ours isn't one of them yet, but you can check for availability Over The Air (OTA) - *#0000# on your homescreen - or via the Nokia Software Update on your laptop.

Once installed, the v20.115 firmware update improves both still image and video quality, as well adding a useful red-eye removal function, which, on the whole, will greatly improve the quality of your shots.

However, we’re most excited about the addition of face detection, which means when you prepare to take a shot, the Nokia N86 8MP will automatically locate the face of the people you’re snapping and make them the focal point. We also like the addition of focus point indication, which shows you exactly where in the scene the camera is focussing. Couple this with the improvements the v20 firmware update makes to close-up focus, and you’ll be taking some seriously professional looking shots.

However, the v20.115 firmware update isn’t just for the camera. It also promises to provide notable improvements and fixes for the general day-to-day operational integrity of the Nokia N86 8MP. Once the update is installed you will benefit from automatic VoIP re-registration, an OVI Chat shortcut on the homescreen, and the option to check for updates each time you power up the device.

There are also significant fixes to the Nokia N86 8MP’s web browser, music store client, N-Gage client, Nokia Messaging, as well as Ovi Maps which includes improved calibration for its digital compass. If that wasn’t enough, there is also a notable overall improvement in the operating speed of the Nokia N86 8MP, as well the welcome addition of 65MB of free RAM and an extra 70MB of storage once you’ve restarted the device.

All in all, we think this is a superb update that brings some real improvements to an already stellar device. Thanks to the guys at All About Symbian for the heads up on this one. Have you got the update already? Let us know what you think about this update in the Comments below.
