Messaging is so much quicker with a dedicated keyboard and none comes more dedicated than the Nokia N97. However, we've also been checking out the new Nokia 5730 XpressMusic of late, which also comes with a slide-out QWERTY. So, which one is best for you? Well, we thought we'd pitch the Nokia N97 keyboard against that of the Nokia 5730 and see how they both stack up. Check out what both keyboards look and feel like side-by-side...
The keyboard on the Nokia N97 is hidden away behind a latch and the fantastic tilting screen hinge. The keyboard itself has a D-pad off to the left-hand side, something which has been removed on the Nokia N97 mini, and the keys are individually spaced and mounted.
The keys on the Nokia N97 are raised and have a rubber coating. Using this keyboard is a genuine pleasure, with only the size and placement of the Space bar being something of an issue - it's off to the right a little too much and is on the small side. Overall, it's a keyboard that feels great in the hand and is a smash-hit for anyone needing to send longer messages.

In comparison, the Nokia 5730 Xpressmusic keyboard also works on a slider but the screen remains flat as you slide it out. The keys have that now infamous dot matrix pattern on them, which is something we really like but may not be to everyone's taste. That said, they would be even cooler if they had a tactile feel instead of just being painted on.
The keys are larger than those on the Nokia N97 but have a far shallower key-stroke, so don't feel as immediately responsive. What's more, the larger keys also mean it takes a little longer to get accustomed to the spacing on the Nokia 5730, as we initially found the outer keys trickier to use. On the plus side, the Space bar is in the middle and of a good size.
We also like the fact that Nokia has added a space down the middle of the keyboard that helps the overall balance of the keyboard, so you're not having to stretch to hit the central keys.

Whether it's the Nokia N97 or the Nokia 5730 XpressMusic that takes your fancy, one thing is for sure - you'll be spending a lot more time messaging and staying in touch, as both devices have first rate keyboards that make life so much easier.
