We've seen the future and it's multi-touch and it's vivid in its 3D-ness. While touchscreen interfaces have certainly revolutionised how we define and use mobile devices, it looks like Nokia is about to push the boundaries even further with a new generation of 3D multi-touch interfaces. Nokia has files a series of patents that will see the company begin work on a bunch of 3D magic. The proposed 3D multi-touch interface will see an intriguing development on the UI currently present on the Nokia N900 and the upcoming Maemo 6 device, which is still in development.
The 3D system reacts not only to your finger movements, but also the strength with which your finger is pressed on the screen, as well the direction in which it is pointing. Overall, this is quite an exciting prospect and it will certainly create some interesting quirks on Nokia devices that haven’t yet been seen - 3D menus, 3D web browsing, advanced menus, the list goes on and on...
