We’ve suspected that something has been going on over at N-Gage for quite some time now - the blog has been very quiet and there’s been little news in circulation, which is never a good sign. Unfortunately, it looks like our predictions were correct as Nokia’s mobile gaming platform, N-Gage, is sadly coming to an end. Read on after the jump for more details.
According to the Nokia N-Gage blog, N-Gage is being consolidated into Nokia’s ever growing Ovi Store, which is fast becoming Nokia’s one-stop shop for all your gaming and application based needs. So the good news is you’ll still be able to get games, it just won’t be from the N-Gage platform.
Obviously, one of the big things about N-Gage was the community aspect of it, such as the ability to post your high scores as well as communicate with other N-Gage users. Fortunately, Nokia has said that it is developing these community elements for the Ovi store, which means users will still be able to manage, discuss, and post their high scores once the transition from N-Gage to Ovi has been made.
The decision to move, re-brand, and change the N-Gage platform is to do with having everything under one roof. According to the Nokia blog, “It’s much more convenient to have one place to get all your mobile games, and this it what Ovi Store provides.”
Additionally, Nokia says that mobile gaming is one of the most popular activities in the Ovi Store - apparently, it is the second most downloaded category for premium content. However, the true benefit of having everything under one roof is that you will be able to access applications, Ovi Maps, Mail and Music without switching between sites, which when you think about it, does make quite a bit of sense.
N-Gage will no longer be available pre-installed on new Nokia devices, and the service itself will eventually conclude in September 2010.
What do you think about this switch, is it a good idea or will you miss the N-Gage Platform? Tell us in the Comments below.
