Why should Nokia buy Palm?

Why should Nokia to buy Palm? At one point last year it seemed that Palm had the world at its feet with the early previews of its Palm Pre device, which was heralded by many as the true iPhone-killer. However, a lot has changed since then and Palm's fortunes seem to be on the wane again. Nevertheless, news has began circulating that Nokia may be looking to buy Palm. Read on after the jump for more details...

Early speculation has said that Nokia is interested in the company for its expertise with smartphones, such as the Pre and the Pixi. According to reports, Nokia would be able to better compete with its rivals - RIM and Apple - if it bought up Palm.

However, we don’t necessarily agree with this assertion, particularly when you consider that Nokia still commands the majority of the market and has just developed a new - Maemo 5 based - platform for its high-end devices, which so far, seems to have been received extremely well by customers.

Initial talk of a Nokia buy-out of Palm back in September pushed shares in the Californian company up by 8 per cent, with a reported 80,000 call contracts traded by midday. However, with nothing being “officially” confirmed, shares inevitably slid down 30 per cent after the initial bump to what they are today.

Apparently, Motorola, Dell, and Microsoft have also been named as potential buyers as well. Consequently, all of which, could be perceived as posing quite a threat to Nokia, both in terms or technological development and market share, if they acquired Palm, as all, bar Dell, have some kind of interests within the mobile industry. So, could this lead to am eventual buy out by Nokia simply to stop its competition getting their hands on it?

What do you think? Would you like to see Nokia buy up Palm, what do you think would be the benefits of such an acquisition? Tell us what you think in the Comments below.

i’d like to palm get bought out..buy who though?
microsoft…they need a new os cuz windows mobile sux..winmob7 needs to be
    some fucking miracle OS
nokia from wut I know they have the biggest share of the cell phone
market but with mostly flip style prepay cheap fones but maybe they could help mass produce webos
    across the globe..
idk who would be the best but if palm had some big backer maybe they could compete with apple and rim…

Well I think you are off the mark about what Nokia currently has in their hands in terms in OS roadmap, they are lagging way behind on the smartphone war that is currently going on, WebOs is probably the best OS out there right now but Palm lacks the cash, marketing and corporate structure needed to move fast enough to compete but the business model they are pushing is spot on, even the road the have taken for the developers is the right one, it’s just a matter of speed of execution, when you are that small you can’t just move at the same speed of say Google or Apple. Nokia has all that and more but their technology has been branching out without a clear direction and if I were them I would be already setting the money aside for an adquisition, Nokia can’t waste time experimenting and betting on a OS roadmap that has nobody excited. They need a top of the range OS and a creative and easy to develop SDK for developers to jump in which is exactly what Palm is putting in place.

Amazing that somebody [bubba_gump] on a nokia following site thinks that nokia only has cheap flip phones. Nokia has the largest market share for smart phones. I also don’t thing they need to get another OS. They already have 2 very good ones in symbian and maemo. They do need better marketing so that people know about their capabilities.

what about the news this morning that N Series will be moving to Maemo by 2012 – doesn’t that show that Nokia is moving in the right direction?
