The Nokia N900 looks like it could well be the start of a beautiful relationship for Nokia as a spokesman has pointed out that by 2012, the Maemo OS will be the only OS used across the N Series platform, while Symbian will be used in other classes of Nokia device. Find out how the Nokia N900 Maemo is the first of the new flagship devices after the jump...
A very interesting story has appeared over at TRMP that suggests Nokia is clearly working on a two-level OS strategy, whereby devices in the X Series and E Series will continue using the Symbian OS, while the N Series, which is seen as the Flagship brand of the company, will move solely over to Maemo.
The comments were made at a Maemo Only gathering but it seems to play out what many people have been speculating that Nokia would move to Maemo if the Nokia N900 should prove popular and this would now seem the case.
This follows on from comments made by Jonas Geust, vice president for Nokia N Series devices, back in September who pointed out that Nokia has already put there dual-OS strategy in place. Nokia sees the future of the Maemo OS platform being used in strictly high-end devices, where flexibility of platform and the fastest processors can be used.
However, what we didn't know was that this shift will be fully implemented by 2012! Nokia plans to still release Symbian N Series devices until then but according to the story, come 2012 that's it for N Series running Symbian.
What do you think, was this to be expected and is it going far enough – would you like to see a Nokia E Series Maemo device for instance? Let us know what you think in the Comments below.
