We’ve covered the development of Mozilla Firefox for the Maemo and Symbian platform quite extensively since news surfaced that the people behind the internet’s favourite browser were making the jump to the mobile platform. Currently, Firefox for mobile is available in beta for the Nokia N900’s Maemo 5 platform. However, news this week from the people at Mozilla announced that the first full version of Firefox mobile is coming in December 2009. Read on after the jump for more.
According to the good people at Electricpig.co.uk, Mozilla have said that they’re ruling out an iPhone and Blackberry platform for Firefox Mobile, and have instead decided to focus on Maemo first as “it’s open and it’s built with the internet in mind.”
Initial reports from testing on Maemo Firefox seem extremely promising. According to reports, the drop down results on the URL bar appeared faster than they did in the PC version of Firefox 3.5, and the general feel of the browser was extremely fast and tactile with bookmarks, tabs and back and forward buttons being hidden off to the side and accessed via scrolling off the page to either the left or right hand side.
In addition, video, such as embedded YouTube videos load directly in the browser, emulating a PC based browsing experience perfectly -- something many browsers, including Apple’s, have yet to perfect.
Unfortunately, Firefox on the Nokia N900 doesn’t take advantage of its swirl gesture for zooming - although, this didn’t seem to be too much of a problem, with overall resounding praise being given to the new mobile browser.
Overall, we’re seriously looking forward to Firefox’s official debut on the Maemo platform, and if the review is anything to go by, it looks like our excitement is well founded.
