OK. There is a simple solution to make (almost) everyone happy. A capacitive-inductive touch screen. Capacitive if used with fingers, inductive when using a pen. Good idea, eh?

Some great comments here guys, all of them make a good deal of sense. Am getting the feeling that Resistive is the way forward for Nokia and Maemo! Are there any instances when a Capacitive would be better?

On top of the other points, look at the resolution of the N900 (800 x 480) compared to the size (3.5 inch). Thats a potential for some small-scale graphical UI controls if Nokia or other developers want to use it that way.

I say in that case the best way to control it would be with a resistive touch screen given its higher accuracy, and especially with the stylus. In this case, with a high pixel-per-inch ratio I think a capacitive screen would be horrible to use.

Damn I want this phone...

well,

i heard resistive screen require precision touch for input

we humans have some imprecision-type anatomy like you fire one shot at one point and if you try to shot anther time at the same point is really very difficult. Unless you try number of times to shot the original point you wont succeed

similarly you touch on icon on screen and try to press it again at the same pont is quite difficult and many factors determine your accuracy, like urgency, you have ample time to touch the icon, if you are in hurry you will never press the targeted point on the icon area

unless you install some .imprecision-type app engline/software/hardware, you wont make to device usable and match to human need

i guess capactive screen eliminates this issue.. a real usability use

wishlist (i never used n900 though)

- scrathless ole phobic glass/crystal capacitor screen
- white metal around edges
- dark grey inlay around screen like e71
- white notification light on right
- thickness of the size of e75
- keyboard tactile feedback as of e75
- steel at back like of e71
- xenon flash
- glass camera cover
- a bit more tampered at back like e75
- amoled screen
- scrathless glass camera cover
- touch based navigation like magic mouse on keyboard instead of naviwheel or buttons
- a bit of more futuristic design
- software maemo ( no change)
- a very small colorful packing like iphone (going green)
- strong digital content eco-system
- white metal buttons as of iphone
- high quality speakers
- noise cancellation tech as of e72
- strong office support
- printing on wifi
- white gray theme like iphone
- rest same

i bet bet bet, no one could ever catch n900

wish nokia listens

PS:

everyone by now might get a news that apple has started tested its new generation of iphone as reported by macrumors.com

if i am correctly reading apple’s mind whats new they might be putting in iphone could be:

- dual core processor i think heard snapdragon or something is dual core (could be custom developed!)

- latest accelorometers

- more ram, better than before graphics chip (could be custom developed!)

- same screen size or bigger one with 16:9 aspect ratio or like that of moto droid, amoled

- better in call quality

- abg/n mode wireless

- front camera

- 5mp camera with flash

- little chance of physical keyboard

- the biggest change could be iphone os itself! new ui could copy of snow leopard similar icon arrangement with graphical animations which are the hallmark of mac os x, while retaining app engine with more apis. multitasking

- better physical looks

- its own map software

- more better apps (could allow kb to interact with iphone or jailbroken software stength could incorporated in latest release), ichat

- mms, tethering, etc.

- unified messaging etc.

- iwork application

WELL IF IT ALL COME TRUE new iphone would be a miniature macbook, imac type thing with multitouch controls and fuctions! which every1 would like to hold desprately

For nokia it would again raise the bar unfortunately, maemo lacks unified and easy look. Maemo might have all these functions but the ui has to be streamlined for naive or advanced users alike. just an unfolding expereince from naive to advanced users…

lets see what happens in upcoming 6-8 months will be very intersting/alarming/diappointing for nokia and for me also who is a die hard nokia fan since birth

having used both screens on different devices id have to go with resistive.
coming from the use of buttons onto the 5800(my 1st touch device) it was nice to use
and the haptic feedback(little screen vibration) was a good mix....giving the feeling that
u actually touched something.....i like that feeling...
i never had issues with response on my 5800 and when i moved to the n97 it required less
\"press\" than the 5800 and was quite a pleasant joy to use....
then i used a friends iphone.....for a week...and ill be honest at times it got annoying as any little
touch responded....too much of a good thing i guess....
i like the fact that with resistive screens i can use my gloves and other forgien objects to operate
the screen...especially in the bitter winter months....
so for me resistive with multitouch would be perfect!

why dont you ask someone which they would prefer during the winter time as they cuss and vigorously blow warm air into thier hands after they had to take thier gloves off becuase thier cap screen will not react!

lol

both are good, both have issues, but one works all the time regardless of weather and has better accuracy.
