Ovi Store App: Notepad Touch ReviewNotepad Touch is another of Offscreen Technology's line of touchable Symbian apps and is, in many ways, a companion app to its earlier Memo Touch. Does it share the same flaws of its sibling?Find out with our Ovi Store App: Notepad Touch review...

So, does Notepad Touch suffer from the same flaws as its partner app? Well, yes and no. Some things have definitely improved, while others seem to have become much worse.

Like Memo Touch, Notepad Touch is a notepad. Unlike the simple text-based pad of its predecessor though, Notepad Touch aims to be someting more like an actual pad that you can scribble your thoughts onto with a pen (or finger/stylus,unless you want to ruin your screen).

Given the slightly rubbish soft keypad of Memo Touch, this can only be an improvement - and sure enough Offscreen have done well. You can choose three different colours, plus and eraser with which to make (and remove) your mark. Even better, you can choose different types of paper - plain, ruled (vertical or horizontal), graph paper and even paper lined for musical notation are available at the tap of an icon.

That was the good bit.

Our main gripe with Memo Touch, aside from the keyboard, was that memos were 'trapped' in the app and couldn't be exported. Notepad Touch appears to have an intriguing solution to this problem - notes can be sent via email as attachments. Genius! Nice one Offscreen you've played a blinder here!

Oh. Hang on, no. The email function doesn't work. Just.. nothing - you type in the address (using either a soft keyboard or - ironically, if you read our last review - the hardware keys if you have them) hit send and then.. nothing happens. Yes, we did have email set up on our phone. No, we don't think there were any hidden settings within the app - there couldn't be, unless Offscreen have implemented some kind of invisible menu system. Oh dear.

Once again, this is a case of so near yet so, so far. If this app could be mashed together with its predecessor we might have something worthwhile, but as it is we will have to draw a line under this one.

Although the app has other shortcomings, the email feature actually works for me – are you sure your spamfilter did not eat the mail?
You see, the emailing is a bit odd: it actually mails you (from an offscr.com address) a link to the image that is stored on the offscreen servers. Which of course kind of sucks too, but in a whole different way…
