symbian-logoEverybody likes getting something for nothing, but when you try and think of cool free services, it’s difficult not to think of Skype, the free internet video calling and IM service. Nevertheless, Skype has confirmed that it is expanding its services onto the Symbian platform with the release of a beta version of its service. For more details read on after the jump.

According to Skype, the beta release of Skype for Symbian will be available on more than 10 different handsets, including both Nokia Symbian S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 and S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 devices.

Skype for Symbian, like Skype for the Android and iPhone, will include free Skype-to-Skype calling, Skype credit, receive calls on your online number, IM, group conversations and sending and receiving files. In short, it’s everything you could want and more. So , if you haven’t already got it, we suggest you sort this out and fast!

However, because Skype is very data rich, particularly when you’re running video calls or the phone function it is recommended that only users with unlimited data plans – or unlimited funds – use the service as it will soak up quite a bit if you’re not careful.

Skype beta for Symbian can be downloaded either over-the-air or via the Nokia PC Suite, as well as sending the application file to the phone using Bluetooth.

I downloaded an official Skype client to my Nokia from 3UK over a year ago. Is this different?

(Skype calls are free on 3UK, don\’t know about Three in other countries)
