Top Ten Nokia Beta Labs AppsNokia is constantly striving to deliver the best, most innovative software around, which is why the Nokia Beta Labs plays such an important role. The Labs develops apps, releases them in Beta phase, naturally, then works hand-in-hand with user feedback to deliver the best possible apps around. Read on after the jump for the ten most promising apps currently being offered by Nokia’s Beta Labs.

Nokia Photo Browser

This application is said to bring a new tactility and user interaction to browsing photos on an S60 5th Edition touchscreen device. Nokia Photo Browser presents photographs and images in a more animated and 3D manner. In addition to this, the app has a built-in magnifying glass that the user can bring up by holding down on an image, as well as face recognition which lets you skip through your photos face-by-face.

Mobile Codes

This one is a little more “techy” and may be lost on many readers. The basic premise of Mobile Codes is that it allows users to create QR codes that other users can read via their device’s camera. The point being that to the naked eye these codes would be meaningless, but when looked at through a camera they could reveal a website, a phone number, or a message. It’s basically a secret language - although, it does still sound a bit complicated to us!

Wellness Diary

There are literally thousands of dietary, fitness and well-being apps and now it is the beta lab’s turn to have a crack at it. The Wellness Diary application monitors and tracks a hole host of everyday health and well being parameters, such as weight, eating habits, exercise and blood pressure.

Nokia Braille Reader

This is quite a development in terms of opening up Nokia devices to the visually impaired as it will allow blind people to read texts through the use of haptic feedback, which means the app will display each letter in braille on the screen and give a sharp pulse when the dot is raised and a less potent one when it’s not, which theoretically should work just as well as normal braille does.

Mobile Web Server

If wished you could control your mobile from your PC? Well, if the mobile web server app is anything to go by, it looks like this good be a reality much sooner than you think! The basic premise of the app is that it allows users to access phone features and data via a browser with the option to share content through a personalised “mobsite”.

Nokia Kamppi Trail

Nokia’s Kamppi App represents the Finns desire to develop indoor GPS, which is an ongoing project based at Kamppi Shopping Center in Helsinki, Finland. At present, Nokia users within the mall can now see indoor maps and relevant shopping info about the surrounding market place. In addition to this, Nokia users using Kamppi can also share their location with other users as well as other additional information.

Nokia Step Counter

Nokia’s Step Counter will measure how many steps you’ve taken over a certain distance, as well as what speed you made and how much energy you used. The App is powered by the phone’s accelerometer so it means you can just leave in your pocket or bag and not have to have it attached to your belt like you do with some pedometers.

Nokia Point and Find

Point and Find represents Nokia’s attempt at augmented reality. Once you have the application open, simply point it at a something you want to know about, say a restaurant or a film poster, and the relevant information will be displayed before your very eyes. However, unlike a lot of other augmented reality services, Point and Find offers bar code reading as well, which is certainly a nice touch.

Nokia Magnifier

The Nokia Magnifier is designed aid people when reading small print in books, newspapers, magazines etc. The premise is simple: you hold the camera lens over the desired part and it displays a magnified version of the text. Simple.

Nokia Easy Meet

Easy Meet is essentially a video conferencing application that allows it users to use both their phones and PCs to create, conduct, and participate in meetings. However, an additional touch added by the beta labs means that users can now share images ad slides in real-time whilst conferencing, which does sound mightily useful!
