We all know that typing messages and emails on touchscreen devices can sometimes be, well, a bit of a pain, which is probably why a lot of new devices, including the Nokia N900, have a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard.
That said, touchscreen typing is still a work-in-progress and it’s certainly not the finished article just yet. Nokia seems to understand this and has recently invested in a Seattle-based Tech company, Swype, that is developing some serious improvements, which if realised, will see some mighty improvements within the touchscreen typing paradigm. Read on after the jump for more details.
According to reports, Swype’s new touchscreen typing technology will allow users to type up to 40 words per minute by intelligently guessing the words that you’re about to type. In this sense, it’ll give users the freedom and speed that predictive-text allowed when it first surfaced many, many moons ago.
So far, reports suggest that as many as two Nokia devices could be released in 2010 with the Swype typing technology built in to the them.
Overall, this technology does sound very promising, especially if it makes good on its promises to improve the speed and tactility with which users can type on a touchscreen device.
What are your thoughts on the touchscreen typing format and do you think it can be further improved? If so, tell us your feelings on this matter in the comments below.
