viewrangerIf you’re a fan of the great outdoors but struggle on the orienteering side of things, the ViewRanger application for Symbian S60 smartphones could be the perfect solution. ViewRanger promises to turn your Nokia into a fully-featured off-road sat-nav device, with sort of features you’d normally only find on a stand-alone handset costing hundreds of pounds. Read on to find out more…

ViewRanger works with Symbian S60 devices, including the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music and Nokia N97 Mini, and provides complete Ordinance Survey mapping of Great Britain. Thankfully, this means that hours spent pouring over a huge, soggy map – and even more time trying to fold it up neatly again afterwards are a thing of the past.

You’ll be able to plot routes, see where you are anywhere in the country, and ViewRanger even offers a 3D panoramic mode. The Ordinance Survey mapping means you’ll get contour details – letting you know just how steep that hill you’d pondered going up actually is – and you’ll also be able to download annotated trials using your Nokia’s connectivity.

ViewRanger has traditionally aimed its software at professionals – such as Search and Rescue Teams – and if it’s good enough for them it’s definitely good enough for us. Along with regular Symbian S60 devices, ViewRanger also comes pre-installed on the Nokia 5800, which is a great idea for the more active among you.

It's not cheap - at £150 for full mapping - but it's definitely useful, and is available as a download, on a 4GB microSDHC card, or as a DVD. For more information, vist ViewRanger.
