The Nokia E Series is the smartphone to opt for if you put messaging and long battery life above anything else. That’s why we’re so happy to have the Nokia E72 here, as it takes everything that made the Nokia E71 an essential device and updates and overhauls it. Find out how we’ve been getting on with our Nokia E72 first impressions review…
The first thing everyone has said about the Nokia E72 on picking it up is ‘Woo, it’s a lot lighter than it looks’, which with an overall weight of 128g is no bad thing. The new design is just 10mm at its thickest point but still manages to pack in a full QWERTY keyboard and a host of upgraded features.

The build quality of the Nokia E71 was amazing and Nokia has stuck firmly to the same level of detail with the Nokia E72. The keyboard has been tweaked and the keys now have a more rounded feel to them but the rubberised keys have enough space round them to make typing easy. We really like the Navi Key, which you can you to click around as you would any other dial or, as it’s touch sensitive, you can use in the same was as the trackpad on your laptop.
In terms of tech spec inside, the Nokia E72 manages to tick all the right boxes. You’ll find the camera has been upgrade to a 5-Megapixel snapper, which is incredibly easy to use. Sadly it lacks auto-focus, so firing off quick snaps can be a little hit and miss.
Then you’ll find HSDPA for sending and receiving email as well as accessing the web when out and about. The built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth has proved easy to use, syncing up with our home network and other devices quickly and without any teething troubles. Then there is the GPS and pre-installed Ovi Maps, which means you never need feel lost again.
Running Symbian S60 3rd Edition, this isn’t a touchscreen phone but still we’ve been impressed with the layout and screen design of the Nokia E72. The 2.36-inch screen is bright and images look sharp and crisp. Getting around the Homescreen is easy as the main features are all there for you to use. What’s more, we’ve been pretty impressed with the range of software tools onboard, whether it’s office, networking or just everyday productivity (we’ll be looking at these in more detail over the coming weeks).
We’ve not had the device long enough to seriously test the battery life but so far we’ve not had to charge it again since our initial charge, so things are looking good on that score too.
It’s early days using the Nokia E72 but we’re seriously impressed with what’s on offer. The build quality is impressive and the keyboard and screen are amongst the best we’ve tested. Overall, Nokia seems to have done a first-rate job with the Nokia E72.
