Nokia N900 firmware updateNokia released its second update of the week for the Nokia N900 yesterday, with the release of the 2.2009.51-1 firmware update. The latest firmware – also known as PR1.1, follows on from updates to the Maemo 5 operating system on Tuesday. This time it’s a huge update, however, with a raft of changes in store. To find out what the new firmware has to offer, read on after the jump…

The PR1.1 firmware update for the Nokia N900 is available over the air (OTA), or can also be downloaded to your computer using Nokia Software Update (NSU), and installed when syncing. If you don’t have an unlimited data contract for your Nokia N900, make sure you connect using Wi-Fi if you opt for OTA, as the download is a not insubstantial 85MB.

It’ll be worth it, however, as it brings wholesale changes to the Nokia N900, the most notable of which being the ability to use the handset in portrait mode. Ovi maps is also updated, according to software website Soft Sailor, along with support for SIM cards on network provide 3, compatibility with Microsoft Exchange 2003, and an updated web browser.

Soft Sailor also notes that there are a host of other features and tweaks available in the update, but doesn’t point out what they are. As always though, make sure all your files are backed up before installing the update.

re the “the ability to use the handset in portrait mode” – only in browser at the moment

Seems faster this morning (though speed wasn\’t a problem yesterday). Also, when apps close, they shrink to the center and disappear in a sparkle – isn\’t that new? Kinetic scrolling seems to offer less \"resistance\", and so a flick takes you further.

I don\’t see any change in the N900\’s preference for landscape mode.

    Who is \"network provider 3\"?

The update process was exactly as I expected – no issues at all. I *believe* it came over wifi, but since I have an unlimited data plan and the N900 transitions so seamlessly, I\’m never quite sure.

I\’m still very happy with my N900. :-)

Not noticed any large differences but I am still learning my way around after a week.

The Ovi store worked well after the first update and there is another app that work in Portrait only, a calculator.

Possibly the GPS work better on the maps now, it starts a little way away then move closer but again I had not played with maps much before.

Downloading the update over the wireless network at home was easy though took at little time at 90 meg.

Looks like there’s been major improvement on the kenetic scrolling, as George mentioned above. Also there’s less cases of the tiny amount of lag I’ve come across when multi-tasking and switching/closing applications. Plus the system noises seem a fair bit more common (have to admit it keeps tugging my concentration with it’s beeps now!)

In general, it feels more responsive and more reactive, both sounds and input wise.

On the down side, the changes reset some of the settings I origenally had, those who updated, I’d advise a quick check of your profiles settings, mine seem to have been reset in the update. Easy to correct, and I suspect it was something clever behind the scenes that meant it had to be done, but the profile settings reset was a surprise to me at least.

Sweet Sweet portrait mode! For those wondering, hold Ctrl+Shift+’O’ for a second, it’s thus enabeled. Do again to disable.

Not sure if it is known, it might be new to some. To have landscape mode in the dailer (making calls), there is an option available bij clicking on the top-title (window context menu). Nice if you were doing stuff in landscape allready.
