Production of Nokia phones could slow over the next few weeks, due to a strike at a Chinese company that produces the screens used in Nokia handsets. Workers at Wintek – the company behind Nokia's displays – are striking because of disagreements over pay and the use of dangerous substances. As a result, there could be delays to upcoming Nokia handsets such as the hotly anticipated Nokia X3. To find out more, read on after the jump...
Up to 2000 workers at screen manufacturer Wintek are striking, which could have a severe impact on Nokia's phone production. The strike is over the use of n-hexane in screens – a banned substance that can cause paralysis and even death – and also the cancellation of bonuses.
Unfortunately for Nokia and other phone manufacturers that get their screens from Wintek, it doesn't look like there's a solution in sight. The biggest problem to the peace process is the fact that Wintek is claiming it's already stopped using n-hexane, according to Gizmodo. It's also claiming that bonuses won't be cancelled – so until workers either accept what Wintek is telling them, or some sort of proof is provided – it looks like the strike will continue.
What does it mean for Nokia though? Well the company is bound to have components in reserve, and its unlikely that screen production at Wintek will stop completely, so hopefully it won't affect the production of handsets such as the Nokia X3 too badly. Just keep your fingers crossed that the strike gets sorted out quickly though, or you may have to wait a little bit longer for your new Nokia.
