Nokia has announced that it's stripping the pricing out of its Ovi Maps service and all you need to do is download and install the new version of Ovi Maps to do so. However, not all handsets will be compatible to begin with. Want to know if your smaryphone is on the list, then join us after the jump to find out...

Losing the costing structure from Nokia Ovi Maps will change the way people use sat-nav from now on. It means no longer do we need two different devices, as we can use our Nokia smartphone for GPS on foot and for smarter driving. In order to take advantage of the new Ovi Maps you'll need to download the updated software and also have a compatible device.

Here is a list of the Nokia smartphones that are currently compatible with the new Ovi Maps - is yours on there?

Nokia N97 Mini

Nokia 5800

Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition

Nokia E52

Nokia E55

Nokia E72

Nokia 5230

Noia 6710 Navigation Edition Edition

Nokia 6730 classic

Nokia X6

UPDATE: We've just been asking around at the launch event to find out why the Nokia N97 isn't on this list and we've been assured by Nokia that it will be - in the next week or so!

I have just downloaded this latest version Ovi Maps onto my N97 and it is working beautifully.

    Hi Alan,
    n97 or n97 mini?

  • Bram

I have a N95 which still works fine. Does anybody know if the N95 also will be supported?

    Thanks, Bram.

I have a Nokia 5800, I download the Map installer app last night and my phone let me install it, because it isn’t on the latest firmware, so i checked Nokia software update, and its fully up to date, any one think there’s going to be a new update? or does anyone know why this is?

  • Ashey M

Sorry, I meant to say, It wouldn’t let me install it..

I also have a Nokia 5800. My phone allowed me to install version 3.03 but it only seems to have downloaded a skeleton version of the maps, so I have motorways and major roads, but no local detail at all – just lots of green background… Anyone got any ideas what I should do?
It\’s a pain, because the previous maps which were deleted in the updating process worked well.

Does anyone know if the new ovi maps, or free navigation will be supported by n95? it got a gps and it is certain it can support it

  • Mikey Bee

@Andres. Nokia is working to bring out support for Ovi Maps on all devices with GPS. They made a statement at the launch to commit themselves to the task, so it’s just a case of waiting I suppose.

Tried to put Ovi maps onto N95 and its not having it.

Can’t get it to work on n95 either

Ovi maps installed on the n95 8g but now has stopped connecting to the satellites so no good whis I still had the old map system which worked and the old desktop app which was also far better. :-)

they actually made a n95 version of ovi maps. But i installed it, and now i can watch the map, but when i want to actually navigate it asks me to buy a licence, which would cost me 6 euro’s. (i’m dutch)

    Weard though.
