If you have a Nokia N900, then the release of Joikuspot could change the way you browse the internet on your laptop. This app has been around on Symbian for a little while now, letting you turn your smartphone into a wireless modem and router, and it's now set to support the Nokia N900's Maemo 5 operating system. To find out more, read on after the break...
Joikuspot is a great application, as it uses the Nokia N900's Wi-Fi adapter to set up a wireless network. You'll be able to connect to this network from any laptop, and it's also possible to add security details. Once you've set up the network, the Nokia N900 also acts as a modem, so you'll be able to browse the internet with no wires.
Although you can also connect to the internet through your Nokia N900 using a Bluetooth connection, using Joikuspot is a lot easier, especially as some older laptops can be tricky to set up. Because it sets up a wireless network, you'll also be able to connect multiple laptops to the internet, although this will have an impact on browsing speeds.
The one downside is battery life, as connecting to a 3G network and having Wi-Fi turned on means your Nokia N900 will need charging more often. It's well worth downloading the app though, as you never know when you'll need to connect to the internet, and the ability to do so without wires, and without effort, is priceless.
According to The Nokia Blog, Joikuspot for the Nokia N900 is currently undergoing additional testing and debugging, but it's set to be released within three weeks.
