Nokia Point and Find trial up and running

Point-and-find-bus-shelterNokia has launched a trial for its Point and Find service, and the concept means you'll no longer have to spend hours searching the mobile web to try and find information about your surrounding area. Simply point your phone at what you want to know more about – a poster for a movie for instance, and your Nokia will be able to offer details, and even download the trailer automatically. To find out more, read on after the jump...

At present, Point and Find is being piloted in Colchester. The pilot is run in collaboration with JC Decaux, and is currently centred around the bus shelter advertising you can see below. If you live in Colchester, and you come across one of these bus shelters, you can download the Point and Find app by texting HERE to 01066.

It's then that the technology gets really impressive. Simply point the camera on your Nokia at an object or image that you're interested in, and wait for the handset to retrieve information. It does this by using a combination of the phone's camera, GPS chip and  web connectivity, scanning the image in front of you to determine what it is, where it is, and what information is available to send back to you.

There's currently a database of virtually tagged items, including details such as relevant phone numbers, URLs and special offers. According to Nokia Conversations, the technology could be used to point your Nokia at a movie poster, where you'll then receive the trailer, information on where the nearest cinema is, and the box office phone number so you can order tickets.

The Point and Find trial also includes the use of standard icons on the bus shelters, offering set information. The icons cover Local news, Entertainment, Eating, Shopping, Info and Travel. As with everything else in the Point and Find trial, simply point your Nokia at one of the icons to find out more.

If the trial in Colchester proves a success, then hopefully Nokia will be rolling the technology out across the rest of the country. We find the idea particularly appealling though, as it's all too easy to find yourself in an unfamiliar town looking for places to go, or searching through Google trying to find relevant information.

To find out more, visit Point and Find. Have you downloaded the app? If you live in Colchester and have tried out the technology, let us know how you got on.
