We’ve been taking a look at the Nokia E72 recently. This messenger smartphone is something of an overhaul of the hugely successful Nokia E71. This includes moving the camera to a 5-Megapixel CCD – find out how we got on with it in our Nokia E72 camera review…
The camera on the Nokia E72 is a 5-Megapixel CCD with single Flash. This means while you’ll be able to get images up to 2592 x 1944 pixels in size, you won’t be able to get the best shots in low light conditions. Other features include Auto Exposure, Red-Eye Reduction, Sequence Mode and a Self Timer, which is pretty impressive on a device primarily, designed as a messenger smartphone. Nokia makes it easy to access the camera on the Nokia E72 as by default the right-hand function key has been set up as the QuickKey. Alternatively, you could always set it up to be on the main task bar, if that suited your needs better.

The camera app loads quickly and is very much the standard software used across Symbian S60 3rd Edition device. So, you’ll find a full screen viewfinder in place and the control menus appearing down the right-hand side of the screen.
You won’t find a dedicated camera button on the Nokia E72 as you do many other Nokia handsets. Instead, to take shots simply point at your subject and use the Navi Key below the screen as the Capture button instead. If you want to zoom in on your subject – the camera has a 5x digital zoom – you can use the hardware function keys on the right-hand side of the device. Alternatively, you can use the Navi Key as this also offers the same functionality. We found ourselves using this method when shooting with the phone upright and switching to the side buttons when holding the Nokia E72 sideways on.
The Nokia E72 comes with auto-focus built-in but we did it a little temperamental and not the easiest function to get to grips with, so firing off quick shots and getting great results can be a little problematic. However, thanks to the quick ARM 11 processor used in the Nokia E72 we did find that saving images to file is quick and easy to.
When it comes to getting the most from the software and the camera, you find the onscreen menu allows you to change the most commonly used features, such as switching from Stills to Video mode, Scene, Panoramic, Flash and even sequence modes. To get this menu onto the screen simply press the left-hand side of the Navi Key.
In the Camera Settings (found under Options) you’ll find a host of tools to really help you make the most of the camera. For instance, you can opt for image size, use default naming conventions or add your own, customise the onscreen toolbar and decide where you want images to be saved to – memory card or internal memory.
Getting the most from the Nokia E72 camera takes a little practise but once you’re familiar with the layout an using the Navi Key to take snaps.
