Gravity 1.3 Beta Review We are big fans of Gravity here at NokNok, both the force of attraction between masses and the Twitter app for S60 by German developers Mobileways.de. Mobileways recently released a private beta of Gravity version 1.30 for users who have paid for the full version of the app. We thought we ought to load it up and take a look.

The first thing to report is that v1.30 is a LOT slicker than the existing v1.21. The interface has been revamped with smooth animated transitions between views and the pointless doubling-up of navigation controls has gone. A new 'front page' for each account has been added, with a compact display of your profile stats and a simple menu system to take you to retweets, favourites, etc.

But what about the new stuff? Well, Gravity has always supported open-source Twitter rival Laconi.ca but this beta is teh first to include support for Facebook styatus updates and Google Reader. The Google Reader support presents news items from your Google Reader feed as though they were tweets and makes it easy to both skip through the headlines and (crucially) tweet about them. The implementation isn't perfect - in particular, Gravity only seems to pay attention to feeds you have put into folders - but it is undeniably useful and a nice extra.

Our favourite addition to Gravity is drafts - in older versions, you would just lose half-typed tweets if you had o go and do something else. Now, every tweet you start is automatically saved in a Drafts views. You can go back to these at any time and finish them off or forward to a different recipient. You can also use Drafts to schedule tweets to be posted later. Set a time & date on a draft tweet and, assuming your phone is online with Gravity running, it will be sent automatically.

Gravity now supports Twitter Lists and you can add and remove users from them with a couple of taps. You can also make Groups - which are basically the same as lists, but local to your phone. You don't seem to be able to add lists from your phone, though, which is a bit odd. This may be a problem with the Twitter API though, so we'll give Gravity a pass for now.

It's not all good news. Gravity still doesn't support Twitter's new-style ReTweets. Given that the new ReTweets are a bit controversial this may be an ideological decision, but it would be nice to have the option particularly as Twitter is committing to them in such a big way.

That aside, Gravity 1.30 is substantial improvement on what was already a great app. If you want to use Twitter from your S60 phone, this is the app to beat.
