Nokia and Intel at Mobile World Congress Mobile World Congress kicked into life this morning and while we're waiting for the Nokia press conference later today, we can get warm up for the main event with the dual Nokia and Intel announcement preceding it. Read on to find out what the Nokia and Intel could be cooking up at Mobile World Congress.

No clues have been given to the joint Nokia and Intel briefing, other than an invitation doing the rounds, which could well lead to new developments in their new relationship. If you remember, the companies signed an agreement last year to help develop devices that go beyond the current smartphones, notebooks and netbooks and have a heavy focus on mobile computing.

The two companies are working together to develop faster chips, chipsets and technologies to make the next generation of mobile devices the fastest yet. The idea is that both companies will develop common technologies for use in the Moblin and Maemo projects, which will deliver Linux-based operating systems for these future mobile computing devices.

Intel has also acquired a Nokia HSPA/3G modem IP license, which will help expand its mobile broadband options. This could well be the announcement today, with a new Nokia Booklet 3G mini-laptop on the way, or even a new class of smartphone using Intel chips.

Engadget rather cynically suggested it's merely an excuse for Intel to attend the show but we're hoping there will be a little more to it than that.  Could we be about to see the fruit of this agreement given life or are we more likely to see a re-affirmation of the partnership?
