We've been putting the Nokia X3 through its paces of late and one of the more hidden away features of the handset are the number of days pre-loaded onto the device. Games such as Tetris Mania and Asphalt 4 Elite can help to while away a long journey, so we thought we'd better check out the Nokia X3 for gaming prowess. Find out how we got on with our Nokia X3 gaming review...
The Nokia X3 comes with a host of games pre-installed, some such as Tetris Mania and Asphalt 4 Elite are trial versions, but we thought we'd take a look at the range on offer. You'll find that eight different games - Tetris Mania, Snake III, Rally Stars, Midnight Pool 2, Guitar Rock Tour, Diamond Rush, City Blox, Bounce Tales, Block'd and Asphalt 4 Elite – come installed all from Gameloft and EA Games.
OK, so there are no big new games in the list, and all have been around for a while but that doesn't stop some of these Java based games from being appealing. We found that the big buttons of the Nokia X3 make games really easy. Take Guitar Rock Tour, for instance, using the numerpad is easy and helps you make the most from tapping the right sequence of notes.
The 2.2-inch screen on the Nokia X3 may not be large but its bright, so images look good, making games like Diamond Rush and Rally Stars look better than we've seen them on older phones. Now, we're not sure what the processor is, Nokia has never officially stated what it is, but it's clear the phone can handle any of the latest Java games out there. What you're not going to find is support for the sadly now defunk N-Gage.
Less impressive is the sound quality built into most of these games. Guitar Rock Tour again is a good example. In the game you're supposed to be an up-and-coming guitar critter but from the sound, the reality is more a Bontempi organ grinder looking for his first gig.
OK, so the Nokia X3 isn't going to compare with a dedicated N-Gage handset like the Nokia N97 for screen, games or processing speed. However, for a little bit of fun on the train of an evening, the Nokia X3 is a fun little handset.
