Space-impact-meteor-shield-2With the introduction of Ovi Maps Racing, we’ve already seen a Nokia game that takes full advantage of your Nokia’s GPS capabilities. Space Impact: Meteor Shield is the next big step, also using your Nokia’s digital compass to offer a means of control. To find out more about Space Impact: Meteor Shield, read on after the jump…

Space Impact: Meteor Shield is the latest game to hit the Ovi Store for devices such as the Nokia N97 Mini. It differs from most games as you don’t use buttons to control it – instead it’s controlled by the direction you point your Nokia in.

In order to get its bearings, the digital compass in your Nokia smartphone uses a Magnetometer. This effectively takes advantage of the accelerometer – the feature that’s more traditionally used to switch your screen from portrait to landscape mode – in order to work out which way your phone is pointing.

You control a gun turret, with the point of the game to protect the Earth from meteorite showers. It’s brilliantly addictive, and it makes a great change having such an intuitive and simple method of control. That said, we did find ourselves feeling rather sick after spinning round the room for several minutes, and you'll have to make sure you have lots of space before attempting a game.
