5 Features the Next Nokia 5800 Needs

Nokia 5800

The Nokia 5800 is one of the most popular smartphones you can currently buy, having sold over 8 million handsets in the past 12 months alone. Technology moves fast, however, so already the spec sheet is looking in need of a refresh. We’ve been thinking about what the next Nokia 5800 will need in order to beat its rivals, and we’ve put together a list of the five most important features. Read on to find out more…

The Nokia 5800 has been a great smartphone for Nokia, but it’s starting to look its age in some places. That’s why we’ve been thinking about what the next Nokia 5800 could include – or is it already here in the form of the Nokia X6? In many ways, the X6 offers a lot of the features we’d like to see in the next Nokia 5800, so it could well be a spiritual successor.

Updated screen technology

The Nokia 5800 was one of the first touchscreen Nokia devices, and this is apparent when you compare it to the latest smartphones – such as the Nokia N97 Mini or the Nokia X6. One option is a capacitive display, as with the X6, offering multi-touch and better responses. We’d be equally happy with a resistive panel however – as Nokia has shown how smoothly it can be implemented in devices such as the Nokia N900 and N97 Mini. Either way, the next Nokia 5800 needs a more responsive display.

Symbian ^3 OS

We’d like the Nokia 5800’s successor to run Symbian ^3 – an operating system designed from the ground up to work with a touchscreen display. What do you think though – would you like the next Nokia 5800 to stick with Symbian, or to make a switch to Maemo or MeeGo? Leave a comment and let us know.

Snapdragon processor

We already know that Nokia has been working with Qualcomm to develop a smartphone with a Snapdragon processor, so could the next Nokia 5800 be a 1GHz device with the power to rival other cutting edge devices? It would be good to see more power from the 5800’s successor, as applications are getting more demanding and a change in OS could also require faster components.

More storage

The Nokia 5800 has led the way when it comes to storage, with an 8GB microSD card that’s perfect for both storing your music, and for easily upgrading. It would be good to see some integrated storage for music as well, however, and with the Nokia X6 offering up to 32GB of memory, it’s already lining itself up perfectly as the successor to the Nokia 5800.

A better camera

The Nokia 5800 features a 3.2-Megapixel camera, and although the Carl Zeiss optics help to deliver reasonably good image quality, it’s starting to look poor in comparison to other devices. As such, it would be good to see a camera of at least 5-Megapixels on the 5800’s successor. The Nokia X6 features a 5-Megapixel snapper, once again making it an ideal replacement for your Nokia 5800.

While the Nokia X6 may not be the exact replacement for the Nokia 5800 then, it does meet a lot of the features that need to be upgraded, and if you’re in the market for a handset to replace your Nokia 5800, then the Nokia X6 could well be worth a look.

Is there anything else you'd like to see in the Nokia 5800's replacement? Would you upgrade to the Nokia X6? Leave a comment and let us know what you think.

hmm. It will be better if they keep XpressMusic series reachable to Mango People. Snapdragon etc take the cost of phone to sky high level. Let that be in N series phones. I would rather love to see a better audio package with 5800XM like in-ear headphones, TV Out, MeeGo/Maemo, capacitive touch etc

I agree with Amarendra. The reason I picked the 5800 was that it is a well rounded smartphone at half the price of the others. I’m willing to put up with a little slowness and the occasional hiccup for that savings. By all means upgrade the tech with the next version so long as you can keep it at the same price point.

Also, my fat fingers give me a personal preference for being able to use a stylus. If they can come up with a stylus for a capacitive screen, fine, but otherwise I would prefer they stick to the resistive screen.

I agree with both of the above comments, the nokia 5800 is just a good solid cheap smart phone and I would recommend it to anyone, great suggestions though and I also agree with a better camera and more storage but I suppose the price goes up with those extras!

along with a faster hardware like a 1GHz CPU, I would also like to see a stable platform for software, whatever it be, like symbian^3, which is maintained well for the coming years, rather than mumbo jumbo of S60v3, S60v5, NGAGE2, ovi,… afterall, it’s the applications which make a smartphone smart.

The next 5800XM should be renamed within the X series and essentially replace the X6 to keep it a mainstream mid tier price offering. For 2011:
    - 3.2 Capacitive Trans-reflective touch screen [save the larger screens 3.5+ for higher end products]
    - Same Battery, removeable
    - 8 megapixel camera with dual LED and HD 720 video [by 2011 these will be the new standard, save HD 1080 for hi end]
    - MicroUSB charging
    - Scratch proof glass face
    - ARM 11 with separate graphics chip to support Symbian^3 enhancements [highly capable at 500Mhz+ clock speeds. Even cheaper by 2011 with substantial volume]
    - Free OVI maps
    - 8 GB internal high speed FLASH; HI SPEED or do not bother.
    - Mico SD expansion slot up to 16 GB
    - HDMI Out
    - 250 MB C drive internal memory minimum
    - At least 256 MB RAM [at least 100MB of free operational RAM during normal usage...the phone should easily multitask with Opera 10 Mobile + Skype + Gravity + OVI Mail no issues + Music Player or Podcaster]
    - Full kinetics and widgets in FW
    - Keep it thin…no more than 13mm thick please.
    - Battery cover needs to be more robust than current X6…which is too CHEAP for a Nokia smartphone at any price. Leave this type of design engineering to Chinese knockoffs please.
    - Some metal enhancements for design appeal and higher degree of sturdiness. Get rid of the creaking effect.
    - A decent case
