The Nokia N900 has proved itself time and time again as a smartphone where the only limits are your own, with the latest clever application letting you turn this handset into a Wi-Fi hotspot. Unlike lots of hacks – such as the ability to install Mac OS X on the Nokia N900 – you won’t have to be a technical wizz to setup a Wi-Fi hotspot either, with JoikuSpot making it easy. Find out more after the jump…
JoikuSpot has been around for a little while now, although up until recently we’ve only tried it on Symbian-based handsets. The latest version is compatible with the Nokia N900’s Maemo 5 operating system, letting you turn your Nokia N900 into a fully-fledged mobile router.
Running happily on the Maemo 5 OS, JoikuSpot Premium Linux Edition is the version you’ll need to download for your Nokia N900, and it’s been available for the past month for an introductory price for 7 EUR.
The software lets you share 3G bandwidth with any Wi-Fi capable device – so if you have a free data plan and your mate doesn’t, they’ll be able to browse the net on their smartphone using Wi-Fi instead. It also means you’ll be able to easily get online using your laptop and Wi-Fi, although it’s likely that battery life will take a hammering on the Nokia N900.
Have you tried JoikuSpot for your Nokia N900? Let us know how you got on if so.
