Design-by-community-conceptEarlier this week we told you about the opportunity to help design your own perfect Nokia smartphone in the Design by Community initiative. It’s still in its early stages, but already there’s been a phenomenal response. To find out what features people have been talking about, and to get involved yourself, read on after the jump…

The Design by Community initiative gives you the opportunity to get involved in designing your own mobile phone concept. Although the final product won’t go into production, it will be made into a design concept render by Nokia, and may help to give Nokia an idea of what you guys want in future devices.

You’ll be able to vote for different features throughout the design process, which starts with options for the display and user interface this week, followed by your preferred shape and size, materials, operating system, connectivity, camera and finished off with any other features you’d like to see during the week starting April 26th.

In the past couple of days alone, Nokia Conversations – the blog behind the initiative with Nokia – has received over 225 comments on the initiative, with over 180 people retweeting the story and trying to get their mates involved. With thousands of people partaking in the voting, it really is ideal for getting feedback on what the public wants.

One participant pointed out “First of all I thank to Nokia [sic] for giving us this chance to tell them what we (consumer) want in a next-gen smartphone”, before going to point out features such as a dual-core processor, cutting edge OS and 12-Megapixel camera.

While many users will also want to see the latest features, there’s also a price point to meet, with the balancing of price and features an important act if such a phone is to be successful. Don't forget, the Nokia 5800 may not have changed the world in terms of features, but packing in enough to keep you happy at a price that didn't break the bank meant that it's sold over eight million handsets and counting.

Either way, let us know what you’d like to see in the Design by Community phone, and head over to Nokia Conversations to take part in the voting.
