Nokia 5800 Price Drop: The End of an Era?The Nokia 5800 has been in circulation for some 15 months now and the last we heard had sold over eight million handsets world wide. Pretty amazing for Nokia's first attempt at a mainstream touchscreen device. However, could its time in the sun be drawing to a close? Nokia Online has dropped the price and even started suggesting alternatives. Read on to find out why the Nokia X6 is the Nokia 5800 users new best friend...

The Nokia 5800 seems to have retained its value longer than most other smartphones, largely because it has constantly been in demand. However, we've just noticed that Nokia Online has discounted the price of the Nokia 5800 down to £199 (inc. VAT) SIM free.

This got us thinking that the handset may be starting to be wound down. What's also prompted this idea is that Nokia Online also shows a quick link to the Nokia X6 with the legend 'Like the Nokia 5800, you'll LOVE the Nokia X6', which would suggest

You know what, the Nokia X6 16GB is the logical upgrade for anyone owning a Nokia 5800. After all, it's a great looking smartphone that packs in the same size of 3.2-inch screen but delivers a capacitive display rather than a resistive one. Then there is the step up to 5-Megapixel camera, which still comes with Carl Zeiss optics and dual-Flash.

What's more, the Nokia X6 16GB is more of a music-centric device, offering 16GB of built-in memory, opposed to the 8GB via memory card the Nokia 5800 has to offer, which all helps to make the move from the Nokia 5800 to the Nokia X6 16GB a whole lot smoother.

I will not consider upgrading from my 5800XM until after Symbian^3 handsets hit the market and have operated with stable firmware (2 iterations from release). So…not likely to replace my 5800XM until 1Q2011. I still think the 5800XM offers a compelling price/value/performance combination.

‘Like the Nokia 5800, you’ll LOVE the Nokia X6‘

I like my 5800 but no, I WON’T love the X6. The reason: It retains the one thing that I don’t like about the 5800 and that is it’s too small for me. I would prefer a 3.5″ (or larger) screen. Since most Nokias tend to run on the small side anyways the 3.2″ screen size isn’t going away any time soon. Having said that my next purchase will be something larger. I will however continue to use my 5800 and even keep it as a backup phone.
