The Nokia 7230 is a neat little entry-level device running the Nokia Series 40 OS. It also packs in a 3.2-Megapixel camera, which is pretty good considering it costs less than £100. We thought we'd take it out and about and see how well it handles. Find out how well the Nokia 7230 camera copes with our hands-on review.
Over the last couple of weeks we've been looking at a variety of aspects of the Nokia 7230 and found it a pretty competent phone for anyone needing a text and call device. However, with a camera that also handles video and a 2GB memory card pre-installed, you'll also find this phone a decent little multimedia machine.
The Nokia 7230 comes with a 3.2-Megapixel camera on-board that allows you to take decent sized snaps at up to 2048 x 1536 pixels. The 4x digital zoom is a little short but allows you to get nice and close to your subject.
Unlike the Nokia 6303 classic, for example, there is a dedicated capture button for the camera on the right-hand side. However, there are no zoom control buttons so you'll need to use the D-pad for this, clicking it right and left certainly does the trick. You can also use the D-pad to take images as well as switch between Video and Still images. This latter function can catch you out if you're not being careful as the only way you know you've switched between the two is that the icon in the corner changes.
Taking photos is incredibly easy, simply point and shoot. There isn't a flash built-in and with no auto-focus you need to be a pretty steady hand to get the best results but we found that images tended to be pretty well balanced in colour and focal length. Saving images seemed a little slow at times, but this was expected from an entry-level device like the Nokia 7230.
One neat little feature of the software is the Landscape mode. Due to the small screen you’re more likely to take images in Landscape mode and Nokia has added a specific landscape mode to shoot in. As with standard mode, images taken can be used a wallpaper, part of your screen saver or even dropped into Contacts as a visual identifier.
OK, so the Nokia 7230 isn't going to compete with anything higher up the Nokia foodchain but it's a great example of what can be had even at the entry-level end of the market.
