MeeGo-on-the-Nokia-N900-for-developersEver since the MeeGo operating system was launched, we’ve been waiting for Nokia to announce that it’ll be coming to the excellent Nokia N900. At present, we’re still waiting, but in the meantime the cutting-edge MeeGo has been released for developers on the Nokia N900, and for regular Intel Atom-based netbooks. To find out more about MeeGo on the Nokia N900, read on after the jump…

The Nokia N900 is one of our favourite smartphones, not least because it seems capable of anything. Although we originally feared that it wouldn’t be getting MeeGo – sticking instead to the Maemo 5 operating system – things have been looking a lot more positive of late.

The latest update is the release of MeeGo for developers, in order for them to get a feel for the platform and get to grips with designing applications for it. The developer kit is available for the Nokia N900, although don’t get too excited as it’s not the same as having the full OS on your smartphone.

Instead, flashing your Nokia N900 and replacing the Maemo 5 OS with MeeGo at this point in time would result in a pretty unintuitive environment, with the handset booting into a terminal console, according to Engadget.

So it looks like we’ll be waiting a little while yet. Still, at least that gives the developers plenty of time to sort out some decent applications. It’s also worth considering just how versatile the Nokia N900 is – even if full support for MeeGo isn’t offered, we’ve already seen this smartphone running a full version of Windows 95, Mac OS X and Android – so we can’t imagine that getting MeeGo to run will prove too much of a problem for some of you innovative hackers.
